If an Iron Knife cannot open a chest in Permafrost, read the lock's displayed requirement before crafting another tool. There is no confirmed current chest-by-chest Iron Knife tier table here, and a higher-sounding tool name is not proof that it opens every lock.
For the first locked door, the supported method is specific: craft the Stone Knife or Shiv, hold it, and hold F for about five seconds. That instruction applies to the opening door. It does not establish that every later chest uses the same tool or interaction.
Data version: Numerical recipe or quest entries from MetaBot use its 0.44.2.4634-milestone export. This is a source reference, not confirmation that every entry remains available after later patches.
Read the prompt on the blocked container
Approach the chest or door closely enough to see its interaction and read the requirement. Distinguish the target itself, the requested item, and whether the action asks you to press or hold a control.
A failed quick tap is different from a lock asking for an item you do not have. A tool in your inventory is also different from the tool you currently hold. Check those conditions before treating the container as broken.

This locked-container example shows the failure message. It does not establish that an Iron Knife opens every chest.
Do not infer a missing lock requirement from the fact that you are holding iron. If the prompt names a key, focus on that key. If it identifies a tool or a held interaction, follow the displayed requirement rather than substituting a generic knife-opening rule.
Use the confirmed opening-door method
The Stone Shiv recipe uses 1 Stone and 2 Wood and can be crafted by the player without a workstation. Confirm that resulting item before approaching the opening door.
At the first locked door, use this sequence:
- Craft the Stone Knife or Shiv.
- Hold the crafted item.
- Face the locked door and bring up its interaction.
- Hold F for about five seconds instead of tapping it.
- Check whether the door opens before changing equipment again.
This is a useful check when you skipped the stone tool because an Iron Knife seemed like a better replacement. Follow the exact supported method for the opening door. No current general rule is established here saying that every higher-tier knife substitutes for that required item.
Do not apply the five-second timing to all chests. A later target may display a different action or require an entirely different item. Read its prompt first.
Keep quest keys out of experiments
Some progression doors involve specific quest keys. Do not spend an important key on another container just to test whether it will open. A key consumed elsewhere can leave you unable to perform its intended story interaction.
The Church roof key is a concrete example: collect it individually from Anna's reward box, keep it for the roof door, and equip it before unlocking that door. A knife check should not consume that key on an unrelated chest.
If a quest key is absent from both your inventory and the reward chest, talking to Anna or Skinwalker can reissue a missing key under the newer quest fixes. This is a recovery option for that missing-key condition, not a universal chest-opening action.
Diagnose what still fails
After following the target's exact prompt, keep the result specific:
| Condition | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| You tapped when the prompt requires a hold | Retest the held interaction |
| The required tool is carried but not held | Use the requested tool for the next attempt |
| The prompt names a key | Check the named key rather than knife tier |
| The first door still fails with the Stone Shiv held | Capture the exact prompt and the held item together |
| A later chest fails with an Iron Knife | Its requirement still needs confirmation; there is no universal iron rule here |
For an unresolved failure, capture the container, the interaction message, and the item you are using in the same view where possible. That distinguishes a requirement mismatch from a correct interaction that fails to complete.
Do not restart the world because one chest rejects an unconfirmed tool. First establish what the lock actually requests. The next action should come from that requirement, not from repeatedly making another Iron Knife and expecting a different result.
